Tom Steltenkamp is a certified athletic trainer and practice manager employed by Ellis and Badenhausen. States with heat stroke you should dial 911 as soon as possible, and when asked again in a little different way he agreed that 911 should called immediately. He is considered the go to guy for training. Testifies it is easy for a professional to miss a heat stroke and that a few hours every few years doesn't make coaches experts. States that only 10 minutes of the symposium covers heat illnesses, and that coaches are not trained enough.

  • When asked if a heat stroke could be overlooked by the most trained professional he answered yes.
  • Also answered yes to the question could you even miss a heat stroke.
  • They cover the 5 years of training needed to become certified athletic trainer
  • He agrees that a coach doesn't have a fraction of the experience or knowledge of a certified athletic trainer.
  • Only a few of the schools have certified athletic trainers.
  • It is stated that there is limited funds and that prevents most Jefferson County high schools from having a certified athletic trainer.
  • Coaches are taught on heat illness for 10 minutes every 2 years.
  • Discusses climatization and that heat stroke typically occurs in the first few days of practice.
  • To prevent this the state of KY doesn't allow equipment for the first 5 days.
  • The body should be acclimatized within 7-10 days.
  • Has heard about teams practicing 9 hours a day
  • PRP's practice on 8-20-08 was 2 hours.
  • Many areas with much more hotter weather do not have the restrictions that KY does.
  • 30-40 minutes of conditioning is not considered excessive.
  • Football players are trained in their uniforms.
  • Diet, caffeine, supplements, lack of sleep, medication including amphetamines all can contribute to heat stroke.
  • Coaches are not trained enough in the sign and symptoms of heat illness. Heat exhaustion is very common.
  • Heat stroke is entirely different, and it can happen without warning.
  • Heat stoke can occur without dehydration.
  • Is there any rules at all that you are aware of that high school athletes can not run 30-40 minutes.
  • He would not stop practice or game for 1 or 2 players experiencing breathing problems. You would treat that individual.
